This Step by Step type Unit Automatic Exchange Type 13 (UAX) is typical of the many that were installed throughout New Zealand. They were used to provide a telephone service in rural areas. Each unit provided up to 50 telephone lines, and if for example 100 phone numbers were required, 2 units were connected together.



The telephone connections between subscribers were established using 'two motion selectors' pictured above. The mechanical switch was controlled directly using dial pulses sent from the subscriber's rotary telephone dial.
