Taranaki Aviation Transport and Technology Museum Inc

PABX is the abbreviation for 'Private Automatic Branch Exchange'. The museum has on display a number of small manual telephone swithboards and two automatic private exchanges.

This Ericsson 80 line switchboard was in use at the New Plymouth Borough Council offices. It was used in conjunction with the unit pictured on the right. The manual board is operational and is used to answer and transfer calls from the various phone systems on display.

Above is one of the four Private Automatic Exchange units from the New Plymouth Power Station. Each unit provided 50 extension phone numbers and the four connected together provided a maximum of 200 numbers. This type of unit, owned by the New Zealand Electricity Department differed from the step by step systems provided by the New Zealand Post Office in that it was a 'Common Control' system using 'Registers'.
